A Better Internet

The Webwise Parents Hub is a fantastic resource with all the information parents need to support their child and ensure they are making the most of their time online.

The internet is becoming a bigger part of children’s lives; it is important that we get involved with what they are doing online. This means not just talking to children about what they do online but also listening. It is important that we talk openly and regularly about your concerns and agree boundaries around internet use in your homes. While the internet undoubtedly presents fantastic opportunities for children, it is equally clear that there are valid concerns about children spending too much time online, accessing inappropriate content, and communicating with people with intent to harm or exploit them. As parents, your natural desire is to keep your children safe. The best online safety strategy, regardless of age, is to talk with your child and to engage with them about what they are doing and who they are doing it with.

The internet is an integral part of our lives, providing fantastic opportunities to learn, create and connect, but the online world also creates challenges. The #TalkListenLearn campaign encourages parents to have open and regular conversations with their child about the internet. To talk to them about benefits and the risks, but also to listen to what their child has to say and to learn about their life online. Research consistently shows that many children do not tell if something goes wrong online. Having conversations with your child is one of the most effective ways of ensuring that they have a safe and positive experience, and to help them to feel comfortable coming to you if they encounter an issue.
